Introduction to Z, the Microbiology major

Hello, I am Z! My real name is Zohaib, but I go more often by Z. I am majoring in microbiology, and I am also pre-medicine. The coolest thing about my major is being able to see and learn about the unseeable - that is, until we see them under a microscope. It fascinates me how many roles microorganisms play and how large and diverse the microbial world is, and, of course, how much they affect us. The best class I took last semester was probably my fundamentals to microbiology class, as it was my very first microbiology class (even as a Junior) and I truly realized this was the subject I wanted to major in. My biggest accomplishments last semester was being able to take on a very tough semester and doing well.

I did not do very much over the break; I met with some friends for food and to hang out, but most of my break was dedicated to studying for the MCAT, the medical school entrance exam for when I apply this Spring. My favorite book series was The Hunger Games, and my favorite movie is between The Arrival and Interstellar. The best movie I have seen recently, however, has to be Midsommar. I also watched the Netflix TV series You over the break, and really enjoyed it. I enjoy rap music and have recently delved into the realm of Kpop (I know).

My long-term goals are to, in essence, do what I enjoy. I have a lot of interest in the sciences, specifically microbiology. I am hoping to find out what exact specialty I would like to do if I am admitted into medical school, but as of now I have an interest in specialties such as Pathology, or anything disease/bodily related! A short term goal I have is to stick to my study schedule for the MCAT to help make this dream a reality.

I have a dog, his name is Buddie (yes, with an -ie), and this is (a silly) picture of him (and a little of me):
A picture of my dog, Buddie

I wrote a post about Hawaii, and why I enjoyed it, if you would like to check that out as well. I am from Pakistan, so I really love traditional food; I have a lot of favorites, but my top two are definitely chicken biryani and chicken nihari! For western food, I would have to say either Taco Bell, or Wing It (located really close to campus!) Some foods I could from scratch are: I do not cook, so none :)

I play video games and hang out with friends during my free time, so I would say those are my hobbies. If I had the time, and of course - the money, I would want to get started on astronomy for a hobby! If I had an extra day of fun, I would probably play video games all day.

  1. Hi Z! It looks like we have a lot in common! I think it's super cool that you're a microbiology major! I took Fundamentals of Microbiology with Stevenson and it was super interesting. I'm also happy that you had a tough semester and you were also able to do well! College can be super hard. Interstellar is a great movie too, and I've also seen Midsommar. I liked Hereditary more, but the cinematography and setting was gorgeous in Midsommar. And it's also great that you love Wing It, I love all of their food there.

  2. Hey Z,
That’s cool that you like Microbiology. I really enjoy the idea of being able to understand at least one thing or process from a subatomic level all the way to a macroscopic level, and microbiology is apart of that process. One of my favourite classes was a biochemistry class.

Kpop is a dangerous scene to get into. The fans are wild, so be careful. I love EXO and T.O.P, but I’m honestly afraid to even listen to BTS because I don’t want to turn into a crazy person.

  3. Z,

Your dog is SO cute. I am a dog mom myself, to a cute little pomeranian named Simba. He's my little baby.

I am also doing pre-med and boy is it tough! I spent my entire winter break studying for the MCAT for like 8 hours a day (it killed me). One of my friends used to be a Micro major, and he really loved it! I am glad that you are doing what you love. Never settle for anything less than that.

Good luck on the MCAT and the application process!

  4. Hey Z I just want to say now I think your nick name is really cool. I've never taken a microbiology class but I do think its very cool/interesting when you're able to put something under a microscope and see something unanimated be an actual living thing. Well good luck on the MCAT and the rest of your semester

  5. Z, I can't believe through all this time of knowing each other that you never mentioned to me how much you liked playing video games. Anyways, I'm proud of you for doing well in last semester as it was just as arduous for me. You know, I did like Fundamentals of Microbiology, and is still interested in it, but really I could never bring myself to waking up for that class, to be truthful. But I'm glad you've found something you enjoy reading and learning about as it is imperative for the goals that you are setting yourself one. Like Ida said above, never settle for anything less than what you love.

  6. Hey Z! That's cool that you're studying microbiology. Although I haven't studied the subject, it's always been really interesting to me. I'm really into fermenting (kombucha, kimchi, sourdough), and the idea of microorganisms has always been interesting. One of my future interests is to go into bioinformatics. I study computer engineering, so it'd be really cool if I could get into that field (although it's pretty niche and difficult). There's so many cool things in the field though such as genome informatics.

  7. That world of the microscope is so cool, Z! So much of storytelling is about invisible worlds too... but that's imagination, not science. And you know it was not easy at first for people to accept that there was this whole invisible world all around us, that we are sharing the world with invisible (because TINY) life forms. It's really kind of freaky when you think about it!
And YAY for Interstellar: that is my favorite scifi movie of all time. Talk about a powerful combination of imagination AND science!
I know you are not the only person tackling the MCAT this semester, so I hope that will go well. And I'm glad you have a canine friend who is there to give you total support when you need it. Dogs are good at that! :-)

  8. Hello Z!
First, very awesome picture of your dog. It made me laugh. Now, please tell me when to go to Wing it. I've tried to eat there a couple of times, but every time I go there, it's closed. It's the strangest thing.
Also, I loved YOU. Scary, but weirdly funny and entertaining. Now we just have to wait another year for the next season.
Good luck on getting into Kpop-it's a wild ride for sure!

  9. Hi Z! That's awesome that you are pre-med, I myself am a biology major but I have never had the interest to be pre-medicine after undergrad. I was also in microbiology last semester, it's possible we were in the same class! We share some common interests, including the movies and books you mentioned. I saw Midsommar pretty recently, and it was BIZARRE! Unlike any other horror movie I had seen before. I'm curious, what kind of video games do you play?

  10. Hi Z!
That's a really cool perspective on Microbiology! It sounds like a tough major but I'm sure your interest in it makes it all worth it. I just finished watching You on Netflix too and it is so good. So creepy but so good. I wish you the best of luck on the MCAT and in your classes this semester!

  11. Hey Z!

Reading your introduction, I've discovered we have a lot in common. I also am a huge Hunger Games fan. I bought all the hardcopies of the series so I could constantly reread them and I remember being so emotional when Prim died in the last book. I think you can agree with me that the movies don't do the books any justice. I also love kpop, I've been into it since middle school but really got back into it during high school. Obviously I am a fan of BTS but I also love Twice, G-idle, Red Velvet, etc.

  12. Hi Z, nice to meet you. I loved the way you explained your major. I get terrified when I hear about people majoring in Microbiology because I bet it’s super hard. However, I can tell you really have a passion for learning about it! I’m from India so we share a lot of the same dishes and I love traditional Indian food, it's my favorite thing to eat!! Good luck with the MCAT, that is not small fret but I bet you will do great (as long as you stick to your schedule, haha).

  13. Hi Z!

Nice to meet you and Buddie. Can I ask why it’s spelled with an ie? I’ve heard really good things about the Netflix show You, but I haven’t gotten around to watching it yet because this semester has been so busy. Hopefully I’ll get to soon! A lot of my friends are into kpop as well, but I haven’t really caught onto it.

  14. Hello Z,
The Arrival and Interstellar I approve of wholeheartedly, but Midsommar? Count me out; the last thing I want to think about at night is crazy Swedish cultists. I couldn't get myself to finish the second season of You; poor Joe just started feeling way to predictable to me. You'd think he would be a little less trigger-happy. Your dog is a cute lil thing. Scratch Buddie's head for me.

  15. Hi Z!
That is amazing you are a microbiology major, and I remember you were in my microbiology lab course. That class was a blast! Good luck with your MCAT studying, and I cannot imaging all the stress as these test dates are getting cancelled. I am sure you will do great! And finally, YOUR DOG! Buddie is such a cute fluff ball! Good luck with everything!

  16. Hey Z,
I never thought of microbiology in that same way as you described it. I can see now why you enjoy so much what you do. It has got to be really exciting to be able to learn more about the inner workings of the human body on some of the smallest scales we can find! Also that is a great picture of Buddie!

Week 13: Famous Last Words: The End (and a soon-to-be new beginning!)

This should be my final assignment in this class as the semester wraps up! That is, if I did not make any mistakes in completing my assignme...
